The Great Gatsby: Chapter Three Summary & Imaginary Journal

Summary

In Chapter Three, the most important part is the parties that Gatsby gives. The parties are extravagent. In his parties, there is food, and orchestra playing and there are many attractions. The interesting point is that no-body is invited to these parties. People hear from each other that there is another party at Gatsby's MAnsion so they go and attend the parties. For the first time only Nick Carraway receives an invitation to Gatsby's party. At this point Gatsby has a secret plan for the future so he invites Nick Carraway to become close friends with him. This can be because Nick is his neighbour so he may want to know him better or he may have another plan, which may appear in the future. Also in this chapter, Fitzgerald has the characters speak rumor about Gatsby. Everybody is telling a story about him and about his background, saying that he was in the American army, he grew up in Germany and even he murdered a man once. The chapter ends with Nick and Jordan. Jordan drives very carelessly. Nick becomes angry with her and he warns her. He sees her as not respectful agains other peoples lives.

Imaginary Journal(Tom Buchanan)
I have been hearing that a very rich man moved to our neighbour hood, to the East Egg. They say his name is Gatsby. They call him Great Gatsby. I hate such a man because he is showing off. Probably he does not have a good background. He must have done something illegal to be so much rich. Everybody has been going to his extravagant parties. They eat and drink as much as they want. I am not going to go to his parties because I hate to be under another man's shadow.
